28th & Stonewall out January 26th, 2010

Promotional write-ups like this are generally loaded with hyperbole and bullshit intended to sell records and CDs and digital downloads and ringtones and all kinds of other stuff.

However, this is a press release for Tim Barry's latest recording, a 12-song effort entitled 28th & Stonewall and it's gonna be a little different. See, Barry, a singer-songwriter and former front man for Virginia punk stalwarts Avail, is vigorously opposed to bullshit. So the goal here is to give you an honest, hype-free introduction to 28th & Stonewall, which hits stores and the web on January 26, 2010, thanks to the good people at Suburban Home, an indie Colorado label.

Barry's third full-length recording as a solo artist builds on the sound that's garnered him a small but dedicated following over the past few years, weaving together folk, low-fi country, and classic rock. If you ask Barry, he'll tell you he just got together with friends in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia and put down a bunch of fresh songs with some real talented musicians. He thinks the tunes are pretty good.

"I like the flow of it, the peaks and valleys, the way it goes up and down," says Barry, who wrote the bulk of the songs in a three week burst while home from tour. He's quick to give longtime collaborator and co-producer Lance Koehler props for his work on the album: "The quality of the recording is by far the best Lance has done, and the mastering is real good."

If you ask other folks about 28th & Stonewall, they're likely to tell you it's one of the best things he's done in a music career that's spanned nearly two decades. (Yeah, we know, that borders dangerously on hype.) Words that come to mind in describing the new record: pretty, funny, honest, guarded, rockin', sweet.

It's also a step in a different direction for Barry. While 2008's harrowing Manchester painted almost exclusively in shades of black, 28th & Stonewall utilizes a much wider palette of colors, moving deftly from mood to mood. Kicking off with "Thing of the Past," an infectious country stomper built around a crisp electric guitar riff and pedal steel twang, Barry gets playful and raucous with the help of the No BS Brass Band on the bluesy "Will Travel," and clowns around on "Downtown VCU" and "Bus Driver."

Perhaps the biggest surprise is "Prosser's Gabriel," a fury-laden five-minute-long historical sketch about a failed slave uprising in Virginia. The song, featured in a recent issue of Beyond Race magazine, has already become a staple of Barry's live performances.

Of course, this a Tim Barry record and a Tim Barry record wouldn't be complete without some beautiful, heart-on-sleeve slow-burners. "You ain't looked my way in months," he laments on "Moving on Blue," a gorgeous organ-driven chronicle of love lost, featuring Daniel Clark (a regular with Ryan Adams) on keys. On "With Ease I Leave," Barry sits atop a hill overlooking the city, lonely and confused, watching freight trains haul coal beneath a winter sky: "I know I think too much and spend too much time alone."

Barry, who's maintained a relentless touring schedule over the past couple of years, recorded 28th & Stonewall in Richmond at Koehler's Minimum Wage Studios, and tapped an array of Richmonders to back him, including his sister Caitlin Hunt on violin and guitarist Josh Small, a frequent tour mate. With the new record poised to drop, he expects to spend a very large chunk of 2010 on the road, playing everything from grimy dive bars to decent-sized theaters.

At a time when most of his contemporaries from the underground music scene have slowed down, quit playing, or found steady 9-to-5s, Barry finds himself more immersed in music than ever. "I could stay at home and make a lot more money working at the Richmond Ballet, but I wouldn't feel fulfilled," he says. His dedication to the craft shines through on 28th & Stonewall.

Friday is May Day, and it's also Bouncing Souls release day!

The song for May is called "I Think That The World...". It's a positive anthem about falling in love long after you've stopped expecting it to happen, and all of the resulting happy side effects.

Bryan Kienlen explains it better:

Complete this sentence: "I Think That the World..." Haha. Anyway, what up with our song titles? They're just weird! Sorry, it's another damn inside joke again. This one better explained over a couple beers in person. Never mind, it's not important, back to the music... This song will grab ya right away with its cool riff. We're pretty stoked on this one and have been playing it out already since last year and have been getting lots of great feedback on it. It moves and it makes you move. It's written in good spirits about finding yourself in love, just when you thought you were over that shit and weren't even looking. Whoa! Suddenly you look around and you're feeling some kind of happiness you forgot even existed! So you go with it, and to hell with all the dark stuff and doubt, what the hell, give it another try or something.

This is the 5th installment of The Bouncing Souls 20th Anniversary series for 2009. You can preview the song and read an extensive interview on Blender.com right here.

"Airport Security" from The Bouncing Souls, out now!
The 3rd musical offering of 2009 from The Bouncing Souls is called "Airport Security" and can be purchased here. With Spring (almost) in the air, this sweet love song penned by Greg Attonito is completely appropriate—it reminds us of all we have to look forward to as we begin to thaw out & warm up. Greg had this to share:

"A good love song is hard to come by. Most times they are corny and annoying, but the good ones are so good!! "Airport Security" is that attempt for me. It's a love song from me to my wife with a slice of political commentary/comic relief. But hopefully when the song starts you will forget about me, my wife, politics, comedy and yourself. If you do, it's a good love song."

Presale is up online for The Bouncing Souls 20th Anniversary Series: Volume One 7" right here. It is available on 3 different colors of vinyl, and will feature the first 4 tracks of 2009 from The Souls. Get yours while they're still available!

Also, we heard a rumor about a "Airport Security" video in the works. We'll keep you posted...

Harvest of Hope Festival, March 6-8, St. Augustine, FL at St. Johns County Fairground

Next month in the historic beach town of St. Augustine, FL a three-day outdoor music festival will be held to benefit Harvest of Hope: www.harvestofhope.net at St. Johns County Fairground. The nonprofit organization was founded in Gainesville, FL a little over a decade ago to provide social services to migrant farm workers and their families in the U.S. Since then, HOH has raised and spent over $500,000 to pay for gas, tires, car repairs, rent, utilities, medical services, food, clothing, funeral expenses and educational scholarships in low income migrant worker communities.

A group of progressive punks in Gainesville heard about Harvest of Hope, and began throwing local benefit shows, while envisioning larger fundraising goals. This year, master planners at No Idea Records will throw a giant three-day benefit event in St. Augustine, FL, March 6th through the 8th. Over 100 punk and indie bands have committed to play outdoors on multiple stages at St. John's Fairground.

A full list of performers can be viewed here. With the cancellation of Florida's national-scale Langerado music festival, a few bands have dropped off and many more have been added in the last few weeks, so make sure to check out the full line-up. Single day or weekend passes are on sale here for $19.50 and $39.50 respectively. Camping sites are available at the Fairgrounds, and sites can be reserved ahead of time, or make hotel reservations.

The Bouncing Souls Platinum Anniversary!
Twenty years ago, the passion and commitment of four guys in a brand new band built the foundation for a community that is still actively thriving today. In a time of difficulty and uncertainty in the music industry (and in the world overall), many folks have become jaded & apathetic about the music scene. This hardship has seemed to have the opposite affect on The Bouncing Souls family, as they fervently engineer a giant celebration for their 20-year anniversary as a family and as a band...

Mutiny is honored to be a part of the festivities the Souls have planned for 2009! To give back to a staunchly supportive punk rock community, the band will release a brand new song on the first of every month for the entire year available online or in quarterly installments (with a bonus track each!) via 7" vinyl from their own label, Chunksaah Records.

Another bright spot the Souls have created on the musical horizon: the second annual Home For The Holidays concert series at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ! Just as everyone is hunkering down for the most bitter months of winter, the weekend of December 26th through the 28th will be packed with 3 celebratory all ages shows, each one featuring a unique & exciting line-up:

Friday, 12/26: The Bouncing Souls w/ The Casualties, L.E.S. Stitches & Static Radio NJ
Saturday, 12/27: The Bouncing Souls w/ Token Entry, Vision & Higher Giant
Sunday, 12/28: The Bouncing Souls w/ The Gaslight Anthem, Gimme Drugs & Let Me Run

Get your tickets here!

In the meantime, the Souls have a pretty killer tour itinerary including The Fest 7 in Gainesville, Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, dates with Youth Brigade in Arizona & California, and more in between.

Be sure to check back for updates & info, as we're sure these guys have quite a few more tricks up their sleeves!

Teenage Bottlerocket have returned home from a triumphant tour in support of their new record, Warning Device. If you missed 'em that's a bummer, but read about the Orlando and Denver shows. The other will be an Adeline release with a bunch of Oregonians in a band named Broadway Calls.

Reports from the Road:
Fake Problems
Our guys travel to Germany today for a couple weeks of tour, and we wish them safer travels than they experienced on their recent Smoke or Fire tour. Chris Farren explains:

Thanksgiving Comes Early For Fake Problems!
So this is the craziest thing that has ever happened to us: We were driving through Tennessee en route to Ohio when a full grown turkey (generally a flightless bird, right?) decided to challenge the strength of our windshield. I was laying down in the back bench of the van, when I hear Derek and Sean (driver and shotgun) yelp a series of "woah...WOAH...WOAAAH"'s. This was followed by one of the loudest noises I've ever heard, shattered glass everywhere, and a turkey clawing at me for it's life.

I really have no idea how the bird made it all the way to the back of a 15 passenger van, or why it targeted us, but oh it did. We were stuck in Columbia, TN for two days and missed two shows. To top it off, there's blood and glass spanning the entirety of the interior. We're honestly still in shock from this, and very grateful to be alive. So I guess in the end, Fake Problems Vs. 30 lb Turkey ends with us on top. The turkey may have shattered our windshield, bled all over my sleeping bag, and scared the holy crap out of us, but we killed that bird. Sean cut the beard off and we're going to have the sweetest dream catcher ever. Oh, and we get to hear a bunch of really funny "Turkey Problems" jokes!

Check out the photos of the massacre here.

Sundowner
Chris has already logged many train hours on his European tour with Mike Park. At every stop in every city they have been met with appreciation, generosity and free pints from their friends and fans. Mike is keeping an extensive tour blog—further improved by tourmate Hiro's avid photography hobby/habbit. After leaving the UK, they have dates in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, and Germany still to come.

Gaslight Anthem signs to SideOneDummy
The Gaslight Anthem has announced that their 2nd full-length effort will be released on SideOneDummy.

Teenage Bottlerocket

February 26th, 2008
A couple of nights ago, after some laborious and intellectually intensive brainstorming with some other brilliant scientists, we developed this hypothesis: you can't get drunk if you're just drinking beer. Of course, it takes real commitment and concentration to conduct the very controlled and meticulous experimentation necessary to test such a hypothesis, so we've been very busy...Basically, too busy to write this long overdue update. All in the name of science, man...

The Gaslight Anthem
The highly anticipated Gaslight Anthem EP Señor and the Queen is finally out to rave reviews like this one! They are currently wrapping up a pretty sold out tour with The Loved Ones, and in March they will be heading to SXSW, playing a handful of shows along the way. They've also just announced a few new East Coast dates with The Bouncing Souls and Tim Barry.

Fake Problems
Besides being totally rad: they are totally busy. Their 7" Viking Wizard Eyes Wizard Full of Lies is out on Good Friends Records, and they are touring like mad until May. They are currently doing an East Coast run with Smoke or Fire, in March they will be in Germany, and in April they have a huge tour with Anti-Flag

Teenage Bottlerocket
TBR will kick off an extensive tour at SXSW this year! The first half with Dead To Me, the second with the Copyrights. They sound so great live, and goddamnit, they look real cool. Watch their video for "In The Basement" and definitely don't miss their show!

Dead To Me
DTM will be playing shows at SXSW, including the Shirts For a Cure show, and drummer/humanitarian Ian has donated a killer t-shirt design. After the TBR tour they are doing some special West Coast dates with The Bouncing Souls. And then...they head into the studio! Fuck yeah! Oh, and they're going to Europe to tour with this little band called Millencolin. Stoked!

Sundowner
Chris sang songs/drank Fernet here in San Francisco last night at The Bottom of the Hill before heading off to Europe for almost a month of tour with Mike Park. If you get the chance to see him play ask to hear his version of The Partisan. It's really good.

February 2nd, 2008

Thank god the holidays are over
January 4th, 2008
Let's celebrate with Smoke or Fire and some free downloads:

Smoke or Fire will be performing "The Patty Hearst Syndrome" on Fearless Music, January 5th (Saturday) at 12:30am on Fox 5 in NYC.

Check out new songs from The Loved Ones, The Gaslight Anthem and Teenage Bottlerocket courtesy of Fuse TV: www.fuse.tv/dozendays.

The Loved Ones' new record Build & Burn is out on Fat Wreck Chords February 5th, and the song is called "Pretty Good Year."

The Gaslight Anthem will release their new EP, Señor & the Queen, even sooner: January 28th on Sabot. Hear the first song and get an answer to the age old question, "Wherefore Art Thou, Elvis?"

The generous dudes in Teenage Bottlerocket are giving away a second song, "On My Own," from Warning Device out this Tuesday on Red Scare. And no, it's not a cover of Eponine's heartwarming solo from Les Miserables... Although that would have been pretty sweeeeet. You can tell 'em in person if you want at Reggie's in Chicago on January 25th. It's their official record release show, and they're playing with labelmates, The Copyrights.

Mutiny News Update
December 8th, 2007
January Release
We are very proud to announce a new addition to the Mutiny family (and we get twins, no less): pop punk darlings Teenage Bottlerocket! Growing up, identical twins Ray & Brandon Carlisle were instrumental in helping to build a vibrant punk scene in Laramie, Wyoming, and they have played in many local bands from a young age. They joined forces with song-writing mastermind & top-notch crooner Kody Templemen, of the Lillington's, and released the highly acclaimed debut full length Total on Red Scare. They recently finished recording their sophomore album with Bill Stevenson (Descendents) at the Blasting Room. The record is titled Warning Device and is slated for a January 8th release on Red Scare. Check out their first single "In The Basement" now playing on our myspace page & theirs. Ray, Brandon, Kody & Miguel have plans for a full U.S. tour to begin at SXSW this March. TBR's live set invokes a style and intensity reminiscent of the Ramones-era 70's punk shows, so be sure to check back for tour dates near your town!

February Tour
Smoke or Fire will be taking Fake Problems on a little jaunt along the East Coast. We've only got three dates confirmed as of yet, but you can check 'em out here as they trickle in. Smoke or Fire still haven't picked a new bass player, but an announcement will be made very soon! Expect to see lots more bro-downs like the one captured here:

DEAD TO ME
The Dead To Me family is home for a few weeks after finishing their US tour with The Draft & The Gaslight Anthem. They will hook up with another bunch of rad dudes from a little band called Anti-Flag to do 3 California dates, followed by a benefit show on December 11th in Hollywood with The Bouncing Souls and Flogging Molly. Read their blog for details.

ANTI-FLAG
After parting ways with Dead To Me, Anti-Flag will embark on a huge Canadian tour with Alexisonfire, Saosin, and The Bled to support their benefit EP A Benefit For Victims of Violent Crime. As a homecoming present, they will do 3 kinda local shows with BTMI & The Code.

SUNDOWNER
The accidentally oh-so-talented and charming Chris McCaughan, singer/songwriter of acoustic project Sundowner, has just announced more fall U.S. dates. He will be joining Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music fame for a short tour of the Southeast, heading north from Tampa to Philly. Since early October Chris has been performing in 3 different bands a night (The Lawrence Arms, The Falcon & Sundowner) in a full U.S. tour/traveling circus. By now he should be in tip-top musical shape, especially after a week off to sleep away the cumulative five-week hangover. Don't miss the chance to hear these beautifully crafted songs deftly performed in an intimate setting. You can see all his dates at the Sundowner MySpace page.

THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM
In anticipation of their new EP Señor & the Queen due out January 29th on Sabot, The Gaslight Anthem will bundle up and head north in the beginning of December for a handful of dates in New England with the Forever Endeavor. During their set at Fest in Florida we got moshed by hundreds of impassioned TGA fans, and I think it's safe to say that there won't be too many more opportunities to see these guys rockin' at a place like Lia's Pizza...

I Went For A Walk
Greg & Shanti have been busy reading and singing their way across the U.S., and while they were here in San Francisco they were featured in The San Francisco Chronicle. Read the article here. Also, be sure to visit their MySpace page, as they recount their trip on their blog.

CMJ & Fest VI: Killer tunes and killer times
November 17th, 2007

We're finally beginning to recover from a pretty epic month of traveling that started at CMJ in NYC and ended in a gutter somewhere in Gainesville, FL in the wee hours of post-Fest Monday morning. We were honing our skills in "The Art of Partying" (to quote the wise words of Municipal Waste), and we were lucky enough to get schooled by some real masters of the craft in the process...

Mutiny/Punknews CMJ Showcase 2007
New York City

On October 18th we had our first ever CMJ showcase in the Tap Room at the Knitting Factory. We were a little nervous about some of the logistics of the night (7 bands, shared equipment, a 12am curfew, and a Beyonce-style tour bus in Manhattan). However, we arrived at the venue to find everybody already loaded in, eating sandwiches and shooting the shit on the sidewalk in front of the club. It was a truly wonderful night for us, and we want to express our deepest gratitude to Fake Problems, Sundowner, American Steel, The Falcon, Smoke or Fire, Tim Barry and The Loved Ones for coming and rocking and hanging out. Everybody played phenomenal sets to a passionate & unruly group of kids, and they are just all around good people... Aw shucks, sorry to be so maudlin; let's move on...

Music Minded Art Show at Fest VI
Music Minded Art Show at Fest VI

The Thursday night before Fest officially jumped into high gear, Mutiny PR helped out No Idea Records and an extraordinarily talented group of artists to throw an art show called "Music Minded." The kind folks at The Atlantic in Gainesville were very gracious hosts, and they also have $1 PBRs during Happy Hour; I felt like I had found the Holy Grail. Anyhow, the show featured the works of Bridey Bowen, Heather Hannoura, Sean Mahan, Richard Minino of Horsebites Design, Chrissy Piper, Christy Road & Ed Trask. There was a great turnout, and many red dots.

New Website Launch
October 14th, 2007

Welcome to the brand new Mutiny website! Our friend Bryan Quilty made it (we're pretty sure he's magic), and we're super stoked. Normally, I would take this opportunity to yammer on about Mutiny's current projects and future plans, but our first ever CMJ showcase is next week, we leave tomorrow for NYC, and I still haven't packed. However, please check out what all our bands & artists are up to and come back and visit the site often as we will be frequently and regularly posting news & new tour/show info.

UPCOMING EVENTS:
In order to endure the elbow rubbing and stuffy industry gesticulations of CMJ this month, we are throwing a party with our buddies at PunkNews.org. The past year has proven to be very exciting, with many new additions to the Mutiny family and an abundance of nascent projects in the works. In an attempt to celebrate the achievements of our friends, we at MPR and PunkNews will host our 1st Annual CMJ showcase in the cozy Tap Room of The Knitting Factory in Manhattan on Thursday, October 18th. The lineup will be The Loved Ones, Tim Barry, Smoke or Fire, The Falcon, American Steel, Sundowner and Fake Problems. We are very proud to be associated with all of these amazing talents. Tickets sold out in less than a week, but if you managed to snag one, meet us at the bar and we'll buy you an Oly. If you aren't going, check back in a couple weeks for pictures & stories!

The Fest VI is looming on the horizon, and if you are lucky enough to be going, it is sure to be a weekend that you'll never forget (at least the parts that you are lucky enough to remember). Before you really start going for it, come out to the official Fest VI art show. Titled "Music Minded", the show will be held at The Atlantic in Gainesville on Thursday, October 25th from 7 to 9:30. Featured artists will be Bridey Bowen, Heather Hannoura, Horsebites Design, Sean Mahan, Shane McCauley, Sten Monstem, Chrissy Piper, Cristy Road, Steak Mtn, and Ed Trask. These artists have been making your favorite bands look hip for years: Hot Water Music, Avail, Alkaline Trio, New Mexican Disaster Squad, Rancid, Against Me!, Tragedy, Green Day, The Riverboat Gamblers & more!

OUT NOW:
I Went For A Walk by Shanti Wintergate & Greg Attonito
Kindred spirits Greg Attonito & Shanti Wintergate's children's book I Went For A Walk is out now! Singer, songwriter, actress Shanti wrote the prose of this imaginative and lovely story, and Greg drew all the pictures while on tour with his band, The Bouncing Souls. Visit their MySpace to purchase your copy & to check out their TOUR details so you can catch them stoking out the kids with their cross-country musical book readings.

COMING SOON:
